Throughout his career, Dr. Ashwin Vasan has combined public leadership with a deep commitment to teaching, scholarship, and mentorship. His academic work brings together medicine, public health, leadership, innovation, and equity — helping students, policymakers, and practitioners better understand the systems that shape health and society.
Dr. Vasan currently serves as a Senior Fellow in Health Policy and Global Affairs at the School of Public Health and Jackson School of Global Affairs at Yale University, where he engages with students and faculty on the future of health policy, leadership, and systems transformation in complex times.
Prior to Yale, Dr. Vasan held academic and teaching appointments at institutions including Harvard University and Columbia University, where his work focused on public health systems, health equity, implementation science, global health, and leadership in medicine and policy.
Dr. Vasan received his undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles, his Master of Science degree in Epidemiology from Harvard, his M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School, and his PhD in Public Health and Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in the UK. His doctoral thesis focused on strategies to support health worker performance in HIV and primary care delivery in rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa.
Across his academic work, Dr. Vasan brings a uniquely cross-sector perspective shaped by experience in clinical medicine, government leadership, nonprofit management, global health, and innovation. His teaching and mentorship focus on preparing future leaders to navigate complexity, build stronger institutions, and create practical solutions that improve lives.

As a Menschel Fellow at Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health in 2025, Dr. Vasan’s teaching and academic work centered around navigating political and economic volatility to build healthier communities.

Over more than a decade on the faculty of Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. Vasan taught, precepted, and mentored students across public health, medicine, and health systems leadership while maintaining an active clinical practice.
